Root Veggies for Rabbits: What to Feed and Avoid

Root vegetables are a common part of our diets, but when it comes to rabbits, they’re not all created equal. Some roots can be safe in moderation, while others—like potatoes—are best avoided completely.

Here’s a breakdown of which root veg your rabbit can nibble safely, and which to skip.

Can Rabbits Eat Parsnips?

Yes, rabbits can eat parsnips in small amounts. They’re crunchy, sweet, and contain fibre and vitamin C. But because of their sugar and starch content, they should only be given as an occasional treat.

  • Serve raw and sliced into thin sticks
  • Offer no more than 1–2 small sticks once or twice a week

Note: Too much parsnip may lead to weight gain or digestive upset.

Can Rabbits Eat Beetroot?

Beetroot (beets) can be offered sparingly. It’s colourful, sweet, and packed with antioxidants, but also high in sugar and oxalates, which can affect calcium absorption.

  • Feed raw, peeled, and thinly sliced
  • Limit to a small piece once a week

Beetroot may cause reddish urine, which can be alarming but isn’t harmful. Always introduce it slowly and watch for digestive changes.

Tip: Beet greens (the leafy tops) are safer and can be given more regularly in small portions.

Can Rabbits Eat Potatoes?

No, rabbits should not eat potatoes. Raw or cooked, white potatoes are high in starch and can cause digestive problems in rabbits. They offer little nutritional value to bunnies and may even lead to harmful gut bacteria imbalances.

Avoid entirely:

  • White potatoes
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Potato peels or sprouts

If your rabbit accidentally eats a small amount, monitor them closely for signs of digestive upset and contact your vet if you’re concerned.

What About Other Root Veg?

Some root vegetables, like carrots and radishes, can be included occasionally. But always check their sugar or oxalate levels, and remember:

  • Raw only (never cooked)
  • Introduce slowly
  • Always serve as part of a hay-based diet

Conclusion: Root Veg Can Be Tricky

Parsnips and beetroot can be fun, occasional treats—but potatoes are a definite no. When in doubt, keep root veg minimal, and focus on leafy greens, hay, and fresh water as your rabbit’s main diet.
